State Power Investment Corporation collaborates with a team of academicians to aggressively enter the field of seawater hydrogen production

Release time:

Sep 05,2025

On August 31st, at the Guangdong Ocean Energy Industry Science and Technology Innovation High Quality Development Seminar, State Power Investment Corporation Guangdong Electric Power Co., Ltd. signed a cooperation agreement with Academician Xie Heping's team (members from multiple units such as Shenzhen University and Sichuan University) on the "First Key Technology Research Project for Offshore Wind Power Driven Megawatt level Seawater In Situ Hydrogen Production", marking the official entry of State Power Investment Corporation into the field of seawater hydrogen production.

According to the agreement, State Power Investment Corporation Guangdong Company will leverage the advantages of integrating the industrial chain of energy central enterprises, and work together with Academician Xie Heping's team to focus on the research and development of megawatt level seawater desalination direct electrolysis hydrogen production technology. The company plans to carry out engineering demonstrations in Jieyang to build an integrated industrial chain of "offshore wind power seawater hydrogen production hydrogen energy application", and work with upstream and downstream enterprises to create manufacturing bases, promoting the deep integration of marine energy and hydrogen energy industries.

Academician Xie Heping's team has achieved remarkable results in the research and development of seawater hydrogen production technology. They combined physical and mechanical processes with electrochemical reactions, pioneering a new principle and technology for in-situ direct electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen production, which allows seawater to be directly used for electrolytic hydrogen production like pure water. The relevant results were published in Nature on November 30, 2022, which is the world's first Nature journal in this field and was also awarded the "Top 10 Scientific Advances in China in 2022".
