China Green Fuel Development Report (2026) Officially Released

On August 5, the National Energy Administration officially released the China Green Fuel Development Report (2026), which comprehensively reviews the latest global and domestic developments in the green fuel industry, with multiple core data indicators showing that China has taken a global leading position in several green fuel sub‑sectors.

From the perspective of the global market, total green fuel production capacity has risen steadily, though different segments are progressing at different paces. Among them, the green methanol industry is still in its early development stage, with 22 operational projects worldwide in 2025 and a total capacity of about 630,000 tonnes/year; the green ammonia industry has entered the industrialisation phase, with total commissioned capacity reaching about 880,000 tonnes/year in 2025; and sustainable aviation fuel is advancing the fastest in terms of industrialisation, with 68 projects in operation globally, total capacity of about 5.8 million tonnes/year, and production in 2025 reaching 1.9 million tonnes, a year‑on‑year increase of 90%.

On the domestic front, by the end of 2025, China had built a total green fuel production capacity of about 8 million tonnes/year in oil equivalent, indicating that the industry has taken initial shape. In terms of sub‑sectors, China’s green methanol capacity is about 380,000 tonnes/year, accounting for over 60% of the global total, with projects distributed across Northeast, East, and South China, mainly adopting the technical routes of biomass gasification coupled with green hydrogen, and biogas/biomethane reforming; green ammonia capacity is about 700,000 tonnes/year, representing nearly 80% of global capacity, with projects concentrated in Northeast China; and sustainable aviation fuel capacity stands at about 1.7 million tonnes/year, concentrated in East and Central China, all using the mature technical route of hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) from waste oils and fats.
