China's first "hydrogen energy highway" starts construction

The Guangdong Province Development and Reform Commission recently announced that the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Hydrogen Energy Expressway Demonstration Project has officially kicked off, marking that China's first hydrogen energy highway has entered the substantive construction stage. The project aims to promote the large-scale and commercial application of fuel cell vehicles, build a zero-carbon logistics demonstration network, and help Guangdong's hydrogen energy industry flourish.
The project spans the 435-kilometer highway and national highway from Guangzhou to Zhanjiang. It is planned to build at least 7 new hydrogen refueling stations along the route in the next 18 months and launch more than 2000 hydrogen energy vehicles. These vehicles will be mainly used for cold chain logistics, covering the transportation of bulk commodities such as aquatic products, fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, and promoting the widespread application of hydrogen energy in the transportation field. The project specially sets a ceiling on the sales price of hydrogen fuel to ensure market acceptance and sustainable development.
The project is implemented in three phases. The first phase has been launched, including the demonstration operation of Guangfo Cold Chain City and the construction and operation of some hydrogen refueling stations. By the end of 2024, a hydrogen energy cold chain logistics network covering the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Expressway and the Pearl River Delta region will be initially formed. By the end of 2025, the project will be fully completed, allowing large-scale fuel cell refrigerated trucks to be put into operation, setting a benchmark for the development of the hydrogen energy industry in Guangdong and even the whole country.
